How to be Called to the Bar
NOTICE
Please be advised that the Certificate of Fitness application process has been revised by the Council of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago, and the new Guidelines are now available on the LATT’s website (as of 1 October 2023). Please see the corresponding links below:
The new Guidelines will provide information on our new appointment system.
For those Graduates who have already submitted their applications under the old guidelines, your applications will continue to be processed in accordance with those guidelines, but an appointment will be scheduled in accordance with the new guidelines.
Applicants are reminded of the following requirements:
- Any person intending to undergo an attachment must satisfy the requirements under s. 15 1(A) of the Legal Profession Act 90:30.
- Only financial members of 10 years good standing may register and certify that the applicant is a national of Trinidad and Tobago and has undergone an attachment (whether physical, virtual or hybrid) at his/her chambers for a continuous period of not less than six months, doing work relating to the practice of Law.
- The training must be a continuous attachment of not less than six (6) months. Part-time arrangements and/or any break in the six-month period would not satisfy the requirement of the period being continuous and will not be accepted by the LATT. Daily attendance (whether physical, virtual or hybrid) at the chambers as well as attendance (whether physical, virtual or hybrid) at other work locations, such as the Courts are required and evidence of such via an attachment work log shall be available for inspection by LATT.
- Where it is assessed that a Head of Chambers is found guilty of making a misleading statement to LATT, such may render the application and/or certification invalid and the Head of Chambers may be subject to disciplinary proceedings.
- No Certificate of Fitness shall be granted to any person who has not fulfilled these requirements or has included misleading statements in any of his/her representations to LATT.
NOTICE TO ALL SIX-MONTH TRAINEES
Law students who have completed the Legal Professional Course (LPC), Bar Vocational Course (BVC) or other professional legal course and have commenced or intend to commence a SIX-MONTH ATTACHMENT are requested to note the following guidelines and requirements for obtaining a Certificate of Fitness for admission to practice as an Attorney at Law in Trinidad and Tobago: –
- You are required to register your six-month attachment with the Law Association within 1 month of the commencement of your attachment or within 1 month of the date of this notice (whichever is later in time) and provide copies of the following documents: –
(a) Confirmation of the date of admission to practice of the Attorney supervising the attachment.
(b) The current practicing certificate of the supervising Attorney.
(c) A letter from the Supervising Attorney confirming you have been accepted for a six-month attachment;
(d) Two forms of valid identification with matching signatures;
(e) LL.B. Certificate;
(f) LPC or BVC or related Certificate (a letter from the Educational Institute confirming your attendance at the institute for the relevant degree is not acceptable);
(g) Birth certificate; and
(h) Marriage certificate/deed poll etc. where required.
- Your six-month attachment should not commence prior to the date on the professional certificate. If you commenced the attachment before receiving your professional certificate, the six months training period will begin as of the date on the professional certificate. A letter confirming your attendance at the educational institute does not waive this requirement.
- Please ensure you identify the date of admission to practice as an Attorney at Law for your supervising Attorney. The date of his or her admission determines whether the Supervising Attorney is practicing for over ten years and is qualified to train you.
- You can commence your application for a Certificate of Fitness before the proposed date of an admission ceremony or the announcement of an admission ceremony. This allows LATT to review your professional qualifications and make necessary enquiries in advance.
- Once you proceed with the admission process, please be reminded that you must be in a position to pay your practicing certificate fee immediately after the admission ceremony. Failure to do so could result in your being suspended from the Roll of Attorneys and having to apply to the High Court for reinstatement.
If you have any questions or concerns kindly contact LATT by email only at admin@lawassociationtt.com
Upon completing the attachment, individuals may apply for their certificate of fitness.
- For Special Case Admissions under Section 15A:
Attorneys who have been admitted to the UK Bar and have either been practising for ten years or more or are a Queen’s Counsel, may apply to advocate on a specific case. Note that such an individual is only admitted on a case-by-case basis.
