Dear Member,
We wish to advise our members of the passing of retired Justice Basdeo Persad Maharaj who died on 8 August 2017.
A graduate of Presentation College, San Fernando, Justice Persad Maharaj was a member of the Middle Temple Inn in London, England, where he qualified in 1964 as a barrister.
Upon his return to Trinidad, he entered chambers with Mr. Frank Misir SC (deceased) on Harris Promenade, San Fernando, practicing mainly Criminal Law. He later established his own practice and expanded into the Civil Law arena where he gained significant experience.
In 1984 he was appointed a Master of the High Court, under then Chief Justice Kelsick. He was later appointed a Judge of the High Court in the year 1990, and served with distinction until 1997 when he retired. His judgments are well respected and for the most part have been upheld by superior courts.
He took great pride in being the only Judge to have presided over the admission of his three sons to practice as Attorneys at Law: Anand Persad Maharaj in the year 1990, Dushant Persad Maharaj in the year 1991 and Prem Persad Maharaj in the year 1992.
On behalf of the legal fraternity we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Regards,
ELENA ARAUJO
