Dear Members,
This is to report that on Wednesday 29th November 2017, the Council of the Law Association met to consider recent newspaper reports in which certain allegations were made against the Honourable Chief Justice. After due deliberation, the Council decided as follows:
i) That the allegations made were sufficiently grave to warrant further consideration by Council as to what appropriate action it should take; and
ii) That a Committee be established to attempt to ascertain/substantiate the facts upon which the allegations made against the Chief Justice were alleged to be based and to report back to Council for further consideration.
The next meeting of the Council is scheduled for 14th December 2017 and the Committee is expected to report at that meeting.
The Council wishes to advise that, contrary to a report appearing in the Trinidad Guardian of 1st December 2017, the Council did not vote on the question whether a special general meeting of its members ought to be summoned to debate whether the Law Association should call on the Honourable Prime Minister to invoke section 137 of the Constitution and, accordingly, the Council was not “deadlocked” on that issue.
The Council will keep the membership advised of any further developments.
